Wells Fargo accepts ITINs for personal checking and savings accounts. You must visit a Wells Fargo branch in person with your ITIN, a valid government-issued photo ID (a passport is accepted), and proof of a US address. Wells Fargo does not currently offer online account opening for ITIN holders, and its credit card products remain difficult to obtain without an SSN.
Quick answer
Wells Fargo opens checking and savings accounts with an ITIN, in branch only. Bring your ITIN (CP565 letter), an unexpired passport, a second ID, proof of a US address, and your opening deposit. Verified August 2026. Approval is at the branch's discretion.
What does Wells Fargo require from ITIN applicants?
Wells Fargo does not publish a single fixed ITIN checklist, and requirements vary by branch and by customer type. In practice, applicants are asked for the following five items:
| Requirement | What counts |
|---|---|
| Tax identification | Your 9-digit ITIN, ideally with the IRS CP565 assignment letter |
| Primary photo ID | Unexpired passport (most widely accepted), or another government-issued photo ID |
| Secondary ID | Foreign or US driver's license, consular ID, or another government document |
| Proof of US address | Utility bill, lease, or bank statement dated within the last 60 days |
| Opening deposit | Cash or transfer, amount depends on the account type |
Why can't you open a Wells Fargo account online with an ITIN?
Wells Fargo's online application validates the applicant against a Social Security Number and a US credit file. An ITIN does not resolve in that flow, so the application either fails validation or is routed to a branch. Opening in person also lets a banker physically inspect your identity documents, which is the same reason the IRS itself requires document verification for the Form W-7 application. Book an appointment rather than walking in — it routes you to a banker who handles these accounts regularly.
Can ITIN holders get a Wells Fargo credit card?
Rarely, at least as a first US credit product. Wells Fargo card underwriting expects an established credit file, which a new ITIN holder does not have. The practical sequence is to open the deposit account, build 6 to 12 months of payment history on a secured card that reports to all three bureaus, then apply. Our ITIN credit card guide covers which issuers approve ITIN applicants from a standing start.
How does Wells Fargo compare to other ITIN-friendly banks?
Wells Fargo suits people already living in the US who want branch access and a nationwide ATM network. If you are outside the US or cannot reach a branch, an online-first provider is more practical. See the full comparison of banks that accept ITIN, or the TD Bank ITIN account guide and Wise ITIN account guide for two common alternatives.
A note on accuracy
Bank account-opening policies change frequently and vary by branch. The guidance above was verified in August 2026 against publicly available information and reflects how Wells Fargo and comparable banks commonly handle ITIN accounts. It is not an official Wells Fargo policy statement. Always confirm current requirements directly with the bank before you apply. For IRS rules on ITINs themselves, refer to IRS Form W-7 and its instructions.
