How to Build a Credit Score with an ITIN

Short answer: You can build a US credit score with an ITIN. The three fastest methods are a secured credit card (Capital One, Bank of America, Citi), becoming an authorized useron someone else's credit card, and a credit-builder loan (Self, MoneyLion). Your ITIN works the same way an SSN does for credit bureau reporting: payments are reported to Equifax, Experian and TransUnion, and a score appears after 3 to 6 months of history.
An ITIN is treated the same as a Social Security Number by Equifax, Experian and TransUnion, which means the credit file itself was never the obstacle. Getting a lender to approve a first account is. This guide covers the three routes that work around that: a secured credit card, authorized-user status on an established account, and a credit-builder loan. It explains which issuers accept an ITIN, the order to do things in, why a score takes 3 to 6 months to appear, and the avoidable mistakes that split your history across two bureau files.
Why an ITIN Works for Credit Reporting
Credit bureaus do not require a Social Security Number to open a file. They assemble a record around your identity, using name, date of birth, address history and a taxpayer identification number, and an ITIN satisfies that last field. Nothing in the scoring model looks at which kind of number identifies the file. A payment made on time is worth the same either way.
The obstacle is upstream of the bureaus. It is getting a lender to approve you in the first place, because many application systems are built to require an SSN and will reject the form before a human sees it. That is why the methods below all share one property: they start with products that are underwritten against a deposit or a third party rather than against a credit history you do not yet have.
The Three Methods, Fastest First
Secured credit card
Score in 3 to 6 months
You deposit a sum, usually $200 to $500, and that becomes your credit limit. The issuer reports to all three bureaus monthly. This is the fastest route because it starts a revolving account in your own name, which is the account type scoring models weigh most heavily. Keep usage under 30 percent of the limit and pay in full every month.
Authorized user on someone else's card
History can appear within 1 to 2 statements
A family member or partner adds you to an established card and their payment history on that account can post to your file. It is the quickest way to get a file started, but it is borrowed history: the account belongs to them, their late payment damages you, and some scoring models discount authorized-user accounts. Use it to open the door, not as the whole plan.
Credit-builder loan
Score in 6 to 12 months
Providers such as Self and MoneyLion hold the loan amount in a locked savings account while you make monthly payments, then release the money at the end. You are effectively paying to establish an installment record. Slower than a secured card, but it adds account-type variety, which matters once you already have a card and want the score to climb rather than merely exist.
Cards Commonly Reported to Accept an ITIN
| Card | Type | Typical deposit |
|---|---|---|
| Capital One Secured | Secured card | $49 to $200 |
| Bank of America Secured | Secured card | From $200 |
| Citi Secured Mastercard | Secured card | $200 to $2,500 |
| OpenSky Secured Visa | Secured, no credit check | From $200 |
Treat this as a starting point rather than a guarantee. Issuer policy on ITIN acceptance changes without announcement, and it is frequently decided in underwriting rather than published as a rule. Call and ask before you apply, because a declined application leaves a hard inquiry on the file you are trying to build. Our ITIN credit card guide goes deeper on each issuer.
The Order That Works
- Get the ITIN first. It takes 6 to 11 weeks, so it is the constraint on everything else. Start here.
- Open a US bank account. Most secured card issuers want an existing deposit relationship, and a funded account is how you pay the card. See which banks accept ITIN.
- Apply for one secured card. One, not several. Each application is a hard inquiry, and a cluster of them on a thin file reads as distress.
- Use it lightly and pay in full. Two or three small purchases a month, paid before the statement due date. Carrying a balance costs interest and adds nothing to the score.
- Wait six months, then check. Do not apply for anything else in the meantime. After six months of clean history you have a score, and better products open up.
What Slows People Down
- Inconsistent personal details. A different name order or an old address can split your history across two bureau files, so neither shows enough to score.
- Applying to several issuers at once. Hard inquiries stack, and a thin file has nothing to absorb them.
- Choosing a card that does not report. A prepaid or debit card builds nothing. Confirm the issuer reports to all three bureaus before you deposit.
- Letting the ITIN expire. An ITIN unused on a federal return for three consecutive years expires, which complicates identity matching later. See the renewal guide.
Building Credit with an ITIN at a Glance
ITIN holders can build US credit. Secured credit cards from Capital One, Bank of America and Citi accept an ITIN and report to all 3 credit bureaus. A credit score appears after 3 to 6 months of on-time payments. The three routes are a secured credit card, authorized-user status on an established account, and a credit-builder loan. An ITIN is treated the same as an SSN by Equifax, Experian and TransUnion.
